Belly to baby l Kansas City pregnancy and newborn photographer
We had beautiful late afternoon light for this gorgeous mama’s maternity session and two weeks later, we had a beautiful baby boy in front of the lens. As a photographer, it really doesn’t get much better than this.
Meet sweet Will “before” and “after” he decided to make his entrance into the world.
At six weeks old – officially an “older” newborn – I was prepared that we may not get those curly, sleepy shots more easily achieved the first week after birth. On the flip side, I was secretly excited that we would probably get more awake shots and – bonus – real eye contact. Or, as baby boy proved to us in the first image I blogged a few weeks back from his session, more personality.
But much to our delight and amazement, Yash gave us the best of both worlds, sleeping like a champ for little stretches – long enough to style several shots nestled asleep and get some beautiful eye contact.
Hello, gorgeous.

Good things come in small packages – Overland Park, KS, newborn portraits
She was a whopping 4.5 pounds at our session having been born four weeks early and it was hard not to keep thinking that she should have been inside mom’s belly instead of outside snoozing away as we molded her into various sleepy newborn poses. I had the good fortune of having my photographer friend, Terra Herring, on hand to assist and I can definitely see why so many newborn photographers shoot in pairs. Having shot gazillions of newborn sessions alone, I can say without a doubt, it’s so much easier when you’re not doing all the posing, soothing and camera wrangling alone. Thank you, Terra!
This sweet little peanut was a rockstar and, so far as newborn portraits go, her session was as smooth as they come. Dad was even training for a natural bodybuilding competition and his hard work in the gym made for a series of shots that I immediately fell in love with.
And, as if right on cue, at the very end of our session, baby girl lit up with a huge smile you don’t typically see with awake newborns at just a week old. I’m going on record as saying she gets my humor and just found me really funny. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it, people.
Here are many, many of my favorites from Miss Lydia’s newborn session:

Sweet baby for the holidays – Newborn photographer, Kansas City, MO
I can’t think of a sweeter gift for the holidays than this little guy. I’m betting mom, dad and big sister agree!
On a side note, I may be short on words over the next week in theses blog posts, but there are so many great sessions to showcase all the way back to summer, that I have to streamline things a bit if I’m ever going to get caught up. So if you haven’t yet seen your session blogged or Facebooked, don’t fret – It’s coming soon!

Sebastien l newborn photographer-Kansas City, MO
I love watching them grow – from the maternity session to six months, then walking and then often becoming older siblings to a new brother or sister. This is one of those very sessions. Nothing is more complimentary and humbling than being asked back time and again to capture these milestones for a family. And for that, I am incredibly thankful!
Since finishing my studio last year, I shoot nearly all of my newborns there which affords us easy access to my stash of vintage props, wraps, backdrops and other goodies. That said, when I first began my business, I shot newborns exclusively in the client’s home using available, natural light. While I love the predictability of the light in my studio and the variety of boutique styling in the images, I have to say I also love the more casual, photojournalistic feel of incorporating ambient lighting and elements of a client’s home and/or baby’s nursery. As a photographer, I think it’s important to be able to walk into any environment and manipulate light (whatever the source) to create images that convey a particular feeling and/or tell a story. So don’t be surprised if you may see me doing more of both types of newborn sessions in 2011.
For now, meet Sebastien. Sweetest little (night)owl. And forever, Esmee’s little brother.

Maclin l Kansas City newborn photographer
I love his name – and what a sweet boy he was to photograph. This is the season where I’m short on words due to the insane time crunch, so I’ll let the images do the talking. Suffice it to say, Maclin is welcome in front of this lens any time. Can’t wait to watch him grow!
And that beautiful vintage green carriage was a thrift store find for $40. (Yes, I squealed too when I saw it.)
