Sebastien l newborn photographer-Kansas City, MO
I love watching them grow – from the maternity session to six months, then walking and then often becoming older siblings to a new brother or sister. This is one of those very sessions. Nothing is more complimentary and humbling than being asked back time and again to capture these milestones for a family. And for that, I am incredibly thankful!
Since finishing my studio last year, I shoot nearly all of my newborns there which affords us easy access to my stash of vintage props, wraps, backdrops and other goodies. That said, when I first began my business, I shot newborns exclusively in the client’s home using available, natural light. While I love the predictability of the light in my studio and the variety of boutique styling in the images, I have to say I also love the more casual, photojournalistic feel of incorporating ambient lighting and elements of a client’s home and/or baby’s nursery. As a photographer, I think it’s important to be able to walk into any environment and manipulate light (whatever the source) to create images that convey a particular feeling and/or tell a story. So don’t be surprised if you may see me doing more of both types of newborn sessions in 2011.
For now, meet Sebastien. Sweetest little (night)owl. And forever, Esmee’s little brother.

Maclin l Kansas City newborn photographer
I love his name – and what a sweet boy he was to photograph. This is the season where I’m short on words due to the insane time crunch, so I’ll let the images do the talking. Suffice it to say, Maclin is welcome in front of this lens any time. Can’t wait to watch him grow!
And that beautiful vintage green carriage was a thrift store find for $40. (Yes, I squealed too when I saw it.)

Anna l Kansas City newborn photographer
To say she was smiley was an understatement. Little Miss Anna must’ve been dreaming about wonderful things during our session because we caught that sly little grin (a little “Elvis” in there) more than once. Love her!
Enjoy a few of my favorites from her recent Signature Newborn session. And, remember, if you’re expecting a little one, newborn sessions are booked during the second or third trimester to ensure a spot on the calendar. I like to photograph newborns during the first 10 days of life when they are most easily molded into those sleepy, curly poses.

You know it’s fall when ….
… this poor blog gets neglected. I’m out shooting nearly every day and then post-processing galleries and taking care of current clients like a mad woman. I promise in December, when things slow down, you’ll be seeing all those sessions thumbtacked to my workflow board that have yet to be blogged. There are so many great smiles and curly babies to share! But, until then, here are two from the mix … one from late summer (I know - way overdue!) and one a little more recent.
Enjoy “cowgirl” Sierra and sweet baby Graham (just look at those lips!).
And, just in case you were wondering how we know a session is “done.” Well, this next image sums it up. Yep, we were done.
Not sure if he was protesting the vintage baseball outfit his own father had worn as a baby or simply the fact that he was ready to eat and curl up in mom’s arms. Either way, I thought this was too cute not to share.
… well, not ‘tailed. But you gotta love her trademark hair. She joins the ranks of Gus, Lucas and several others who’ve graced this blog with their trademark locks.
I don’t shoot many “older” newborns as it’s usually best to get them in in those first 6 to 10 days of life. That said, I can’t say I found this little lady difficult at all. Nope. She was as alert as they come – but it gave me a welcome chance to capture some of those beautiful, bright newborn eyes.
Meet Cora.
He slept so soundly during our session I had to pinch myself once or twice as we went from setup to setup with ease. I know there’s a little stinker in my future somewhere, so if it happens to be your newborn, don’t feel bad; I simply had it coming. LOL.
Meet handsome little Jamie, complete with that soft, dreamy swirl of newborn hair. I’ll bet if you close your eyes and get close enough to the screen, you can almost smell his newborn goodness.
