Maternity Palooza

One of my favorite things about maternity photography sessions is that there are so many ways to capture this big milestone, be it a more “intimate” studio session (like the next post down), a colorful on-location session with a downtown vibe fully clothed, or a more casual studio session with plenty of belly laughs (pardon the pun) and mom/dad interaction. I like to shoot maternity sessions right around 30-32 weeks pregnant. It’s the stage of pregnancy where mom still feels cute/energetic and we’re still far enough ahead of early labor, third-trimester water retention, possible bedrest and the other fun stuff that comes with “I’m so done being pregnant.”

Here’s another interesting Year of the Dragon factoid for you: Each of the these three mama-to-be was/is carrying a boy.

Vintage meets modern

I’ve been on a light, airy, white, modern, vintage kind of kick lately. And I’ve been dying to try my hand at a more high-key (the photography term that describes the whiter, brighter lighting) studio maternity session. I had ordered two vintage slips online without seeing her belly and - much to my joy – both fit like a glove. Below is the result of this vision I had swimming around my head- inspired by so many beautiful boudoir images – for months. I think she knocked it out of the park, don’t you?

You’ll be seeing her again very soon as she welcomes a baby boy into the world in the coming days.

Pretty in Pink and Purple

There were a host of babies on my Baby’s First Year program (sessions at newborn, six months and one year) who were born last summer and turned 6 months early this year. It’s one of my favorite ages to photograph and, for the babies making that milestone achievement and sitting up during the colder winter months, we weren’t short on color even though we couldn’t be outdoors.

This beautiful baby makes me smile every time I see her – those bright eyes and big expressions have made her one of my favorite little people.

I can’t recall a four-month span (even a year) that I’ve photographed so many newborn baby boys consecutively. Two of my May babies came early and were girls that we shot last week, but the rest since December of last year have been boys. I’m not complaining one bit, though. I could get used to their laid back little personalities — all have been good eaters, sleepers and oh-so-sweet. If you’re evaluating newborn photographers in Kansas City and haven’t scheduled yet, contact me soon. May and June are full, and I am now booking July through year-end newborn sessions, in addition to older babies, children, high school seniors and families.

Kansas City newborn photography: Baby Sutton

If you’ve developed an addiction to Etsy or Pinterest, then you know how many great inspiration boards exist for planning and decorating your baby’s nursery. This little guy’s “sanctuary” was definitely no exception and I squealed when I saw the colors and unique nuances as his mom and I were discussing the vision for his newborn session. His mom is one of those clients that I just clicked with from the very first phone call. Love her personality, her sense of style and her appreciation of photographic art. I also love hearing about and seeing the items, colors, heirlooms that are special to each client and figuring out ways big and small that we can incorporate one or more of those elements into artful images once baby is born.

Immediately, my wheels were turning on how best we could create a signature image designed especially for his nursery. I am obsessed with that color of blue (see the masthead image on my Facebook business page if you don’t believe me) and the complementing oranges. As a matter of fact, you’ll see those same colors reflected in another amazing nursery and subsequent newborn session later this month (baby boy is due in just a week).

If you follow my business page on Facebook, you’ll know I’ve been intrigued by the sheer number of newborn boys in 2012. I’ve shot so many newborns and they’ve all been boys. There hasn’t been a newborn girl in the studio since December! The explanation as one client shared with me: 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. And, supposedly, that means more baby boys. Given that I shot another little guy yesterday and will have two more boys in the coming week, suffice it to say, I’m a believer.

I also have to add that these little boys have been the BEST sleepers and my most efficient newborn sessions. EVER.

Be it “Year of the Dragon” or some other phenomenon, I’ll take it.
