Happy Holidays {Kansas City child photography}
Hear that? No, really … take a good listen.
It’s the sound of me exhaling, accompanied by a good, long stretch. I can’t begin to explain how great it feels to have made it up, up and over the busy fall/holiday season and be sitting on the downward side knowing that not only have all client products arrived on time, but we were able to get our own holiday cards out last week, too. It’s an unbelievable feeling! Tomorrow night, we even have a small group of photographer friends getting together for dinner and much-needed chatter. I can’t wait!
2008 was an amazing year and I’m so blessed and humbled by the support of my husband, my family, wonderful clients, friends and faithful blog readers. I could not in a million years have dreamed I would be at this point in my business, right here, right now. Keep watching the blog for several new items in 2009, including a new website design and new products.
I’ll be posting more client holiday cards later this week, but thought it appropriate to start with our own. We got lucky the afternoon we did this session. She had just woken from her afternoon nap and the light was fading quickly, but it was simply tooooo cold to go outside for pictures, so we threw on the holiday outfit and set up in my husband’s office … a small room with an east-facing window. Keep in mind what little light was left was on the other side of the house and I didn’t want to break out the flash. Luckily, my trusty 50/1.4 did the trick. This is what I love about natural light — the soft glow on the skin and the depth of contrast and tones. It almost looks like we were in a studio, but it was simply a chocolate leather couch.
The back image of our family was shot earlier this fall by my wonderful photographer friend,
Jamie Miller. I had always wanted this shot for our family, but we never seemed to find the time to get our own family shots taken in the same manner that I do for my clients (isn’t that the case with most photographers?) So thank you, Jamie, for giving us such a beautiful gift that we will treasure forever.
Happy Holidays to all!

Announce it with style {Kansas City baby photography}
Here’s the finished custom-designed birth announcement, introducing beautiful little Esmee. We did her newborn session a few months back and I wanted to wait until Mom had a chance to send out the announcements before posting here. You’ll be seeing lots more of her right here as we capture her first year of life. This is a custom-designed 5×7 flat card printed on art linen card stock (last name is blurred intentionally for privacy).

Hip and functional … now that’s my kind of baby gear!
Last year, I blogged about her girls and our photo session … three of the cutest little things ever. And today, I had to post this and blog about their mom … because she’s making some of the cutest, hippest baby gear ever. And affordably! She’s just getting started, but I read on her blog today that she’s going to be featured in the KC Star on Aug. 17. All you hot mamas … and hot mamas-to-be really need to check out her stuff. She does custom work, too, so I have a feeling the designs are endless! Way to go, Brit!
I know she won’t mind that I borrowed the image of her cool, custom baby wipe cases — how cute are these!!!??!!! And she’s home grown … all products are made right here in KC … what better way to support our local economy.

Behind that sweet exterior…
is a little spitfire. And she knows it. But man oh man, what a little bribery will get this mom. It seems our little girl has a sweet tooth and she’ll do just about anything for one of those little Dum-Dum suckers. Even sit still in a chair while mom snaps away. This is what she gave me in five minutes of shooting and it was soooo worth it! Yes, she’s wearing the same sundress from her 18 month session, but I fell in love with these the minute I got her to laughing in the viewfinder. I’ve been meaning to post this for awhile, but it’s the height of our crazy busy late summer/fall photography season and things get a little nuts.
So, without further ado … our Bella Bug and her own “blue chair session” …

So what did we do with these great images? We ordered five amazing gallery-wrapped canvas prints, of course! Here they are hanging in our home and my studio. The four vertical canvases are size 14 x 30 and the larger canvas is a 24 x 36. I LOVE the way they turned out! While there is absolutely no shame in traditional, framed and matted wall displays, I always encourage clients to “think outside the frame” and try some alternative ways to showcase their images.

And speaking of creative imagery, here are some of the ways recent clients have chosen to showcase theirs …
A 5×5 “Perfect Little Brag Book” … just the right size for purse or briefcase:

Several 10×10 custom-designed coffee table books complete with custom photo covers, high-quality press-printed pages and visual “stories” that are truly one-of-a-kind:

Another canvas gallery-wrap – this one is a 16×20 and I think the feeling in this image was perfect for a canvas:

And, finally, a wall display in my studio comprised completely of images mounted on 3/4″ standout which comes pre-drilled with holes in the back for hanging pictures flush against the wall, no frames needed.

All of these and more are available to each and every client – just ask to visit the studio to see samples and get the creative juices flowing!
