A family affair {Kansas City family photographer}
So many colors. So many textures. So many connections. So many families this past fall and winter came into my life and in front of the lens.
Yes, it was often cold and windy. There were more red, runny noses than I can count. And even a few meltdowns. Anyone who’s ever attempted to dress an entire family for a photo shoot and get out the door on time with everyone well-rested and well-fed (and completely unscathed) will attest to that one. But, in the end, we were able to capture not only custom images for holiday cards, gifts and home displays, but lasting memories.
So, I pose this question (especially to the moms out there reading this): When was the last time you stepped into an image with your children? If it took you more than five seconds to answer that question, it’s time, people. I promise, beyond a shred of a doubt, that there never will be a perfect, perfect moment (you know the one that dangles like a carrot in front of each of us … when we lose those last few pounds … when we grow our hair out … etc.) And, not surprisingly, those aren’t the things our children will see years from now when they’re looking through the albums. Instead, they’ll smile at the laughter, the hugs, the kisses and all of the things that make us a family.
Here are some of my favorites from several recent family sessions (starting with my own quickie family session thanks to the work of my good friend, Carmen Carver). Seriously, we shot all of this in my studio in about 10 minutes before we left for a company holiday party.
Don’t worry, if you don’t yet see yours here, I’ve got several more blog posts to go before I’m caught up, but I’m making progress! And, excuse the odd sizing variances. I’m working on a new blog site/rebranding so time is valuable right now and my main focus is simply sharing recent work so I don’t get even further behind here on the blog as the 2011 sessions are now in full swing.
And then there’s this gorgeous family and a sunset session on one of our last “not as cold as it could be, but still chilly” December days.
And this fun “urban” family session downtown where, I swear, we got the BEST shots of our entire session in the first 10 minutes (gotta love when that happens):

And a late afternoon session to capture the fall colors and this terrific family in the most beautiful light:
More fall/winter families to come, so stay tuned!

Blogo’rama – part 1 (Kansas City family photographer)
So much to show and tell and I leave for Imaging USA in less than two days, so let’s get started. I’m going to mix up some late summer and fall sessions in no particular order, but there were a slew of wonderful sessions the past six months and looking back at those happy faces makes me equally happy.
Some of our shooting days were downright freezing cold and windy, like this one (but you’d seriously never know it from the ever handsome Gus and his gorgeous momma):
But before we hit the single digit temperatures, I got to spend an afternoon with these guys. (Check out that eye color). The last time you saw little sister on the blog, we were shooting her newborn session. My how time flies!

And let’s not forget Dylan who, along with his dad, has a big love of trains (and striking nonchalant poses in front of vintage chairs, apparently.) Ok, I made that last part up, but I swear he just walked right over, crossed one leg over the other and gazed off into the distance as if he’d modeled like this a thousand times. What a sweet, sweet boy!

Upon seeing her gallery, she wrote …
“Wow. I can’t believe these little people are really mine. I feel so lucky.”
And I couldn’t have summed up the power of photography any better. In a single image, we can freeze a moment and bottle the joy and love we feel as brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers — families.
Yes, exposure, color, contrast, composition and post-processing are all incredibly important elements of a great photograph, but ultimately, I think it’s about this: Did the image make you feel like laughing? Crying? Could you almost ‘smell’ the newborn skin? Did you want to jump right into the shot and share your own belly laugh?
Did the image make you feel something?

Just one wish l Lenexa, KS, child photographer
Not Kinect for Xbox. Not an American Girl. Not the new sneakers or the snowboard. Not the diamond necklace or the $800 hand-crafted leather boots. Not even the iPad.
In the season of excess and “stuff” … of stress over crowded mall parking lots, long lines and midnight door busters, their wish simply rings the most true, the most urgent, the most worthy.
Just one more prayer. Just one foot in front of the other. Just get through the chemo. Just keep producing good cells. Just win the battle. Just beat the tumor.
All to just watch her grow. Just love her. Just one more day. Just one more year. Just one more lifetime.
Just one wish. (Read to bottom and see how you can help).
To be able to grow up healthy and happy: It doesn’t seem like too much to ask. Avery is one of the littlest soldiers battling pediatric cancer. Nearly one year ago, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and so began their journey through the maze of treatments, specialists, hospitals and the unknown of this disease. Her next round of chemo begins the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve and her family will ring in the New Year at Children’s Mercy Hospital. I can’t begin to describe the unimaginable strength Jenn and Jeremy have shown. But, as Jenn admits, they have an army of “Team Avery” supporters to thank as they simply cannot do it alone.
So in this season of excess, I make this plea to anyone reading this blog post: Make Avery’s recovery a part of your daily prayers, then visit Avery’s blog and join Team Avery by making a donation (see the little Donate button in the middle of the top of the home page). Health insurance is a wonderful thing to have, but it doesn’t come close to covering all of the financial hardships presented when one or both parents is required to be away from their jobs for surgeries, chemo, hospital visits and general care as Avery continues her battle, as well as the copays, overages and other costs associated with cancer. $25, $50 … any amount will make a difference and is appreciated more than words can express.

Emma and family l fall family photographer-Kansas City, MO
Speaking of watching Baby’s First Year clients grow … say hello to big girl Emma featured in her last session of the first year. She’s clearly inherited mom’s fabulous sense of style and we had a blast following this busy little bee around in the fall colors. She still holds the record for the most soundly sleeping newborn girl I’ve ever photographed for a full Signature Newborn Session. And let’s not forget that signature head of hair. Thank you, Jeremy, Christine and Emma for a wonderful first year of memories!

Summer families l Kansas City child photographer
These blog peeks are long overdue. Yes, they’ve already received their ordered products, but I have a list of summer sessions yet to be blogged. So here are two more “green” (vs. “urban”) Kansas City photography sessions that I had a ball editing – love those smiles and happy kids!
I think both moms did a fantastic job coming up with complementary, colorful outfits:
