Remember this beautiful pregnant mama from a few months back? That was one of my all-time favorite maternity photography sessions ever – and she made it look like it wasn’t freezing cold in the heart of Kansas City winter, too!

Well, this sweet girl made her appearance just before Christmas and visited me here at the studio for her newborn session shortly after. She made us work extra hard for each image, but patience won out in the end.

For prospective parents and clients: This is truly where hiring an experienced, reputable newborn photographer makes a world of difference. It’s one of the most challenging session types for most photographers and harder than it looks if you’re really paying attention to the details that make for artful newborn photographs. Not every baby arrives at their newborn photography session in a deep sleep. Not every baby – even those as young as 6 days old – likes being manipulated, curled … or as I like to put it “messed with” … for certain positions. While it may not happen often, I do get newborns who have colic, are fussy or just want to be wide awake and stretching out those little limbs. And it’s important to know what works best in those instances, to understand the anatomy of a newborn, to have patience, and go with the flow to achieve beautiful, safe images that capture this fleeting time in a baby’s life.

In doing so, we managed to achieve the shots mom had envisioned. Just look at those lips! I photographed her big sister, as well, throughout her first year and, suffice it to say, these two gorgeous little apples didn’t fall far from the tree.
