Every client I know goes through it. Even me. The ever stressful “what to wear?” Especially if you’re dressing more than one child or adult. In my pre-session consults, I always recommend layers, textures and colors when possible. Even if you love black and white images and aren’t into the huge color pop, trust that extra layers and textures will make black and white images even more rich because they add depth and contrast to the image. Hats, scarves, buttoned sweaters, jackets, funky boots, stripey tights, fun jewelry are always good and I recommend bringing a small bag of various items that coordinate with your outfits. We often style right there on the spot and will throw a hat on for one shot and take it off for another. For babies and kids, this is the one time that being funky and mismatched or eclectic within the same 3 colors actually works so well! So don’t feel like you have to buy the entire outfit exactly as it’s displayed in the store. Or that you have to stick with just stripes or just solids.
I also recommend picking 3-4 colors to play off of for the entire family. If you have an upcoming session with me, the following might just be the thing you need to get a headstart on outfits. It’s merely meant as a guide, so don’t run out and buy these exact outfits (we wouldn’t want everyone to look the same!). And, I encourage you to add even more colors/patterns into these as they are meant to foundational. The color guides at the bottom of each page provide a little inspiration on palettes.
I was at Baby Gap this week and the outfits there are seriously to die for, too! Children’s Place has awesome colors/textures this year and fun hats/boots. In addition to Carters and Gymboree, here are some fun places to shop online that you may not have heard of:
