More babies! Playing catch up … {Kansas City baby photographer}
I wrapped processing beautiful Kenadie and handsome little Brekken over the past two weeks and hadn’t made it back to the blog to add a few additional favorites from their sessions. There are three more newborn girls coming up in the next three weeks, so stay tuned. Maybe it’s spring … I think my business might be trying to tell me something …. hmmm. I’ve got a few new things “vintage” and “shabby” we’ll be trying out – should be fun!
Newborn Session Timing
A helpful tip if you or someone you know is interested in a newborn session: Book your session early while you’re still pregnant. Not only does this remove the task of remembering to schedule a session once you’ve got far more important things taking up your time (like feeding, bathing, diapering, etc.), but it helps us secure a general timeframe around your due date for your newborn session that is within 10 days of birth, preferably about six days following birth. That’s the timeframe most newborns are most easily “molded” into those sleepy, curly positions that we love and it’s typically the period before any baby acne or colic will set in if it’s going to happen. I’ve talked about this in previous posts, but it’s always a good reminder every so often.
Another unique idea: A newborn session or First Year Package is a great shower or gift idea for any new mom-to-be … gift certificates are available in any denomination, contact me for details.

16 hours and counting … {Kansas City maternity photographer}
We really had no idea that less than 16 hours following our maternity session, they would welcome a beautiful baby girl into the world. (See this post for more details.) I’m actually still so impressed she was walking all over the urban part of our session in those heels and her pre-pregnancy jeans. (That is not a typo, I swear. I’m 200 percent sure I couldn’t stuff one non-pregnant thigh into those if both sides were sewn together!)
In a way, I’m so glad our session happened when it did, because now they’ll have memories of the belly, the glow and the anticipation during those very last pregnant moments. We had a fantastic time and I couldn’t be happier for them. Here are several peeks of the latest belly to join the blog. Enjoy!

This one’s for Andrew. Proof that I am, indeed, very funny. You can’t argue with this one; just look at his face.

My colorful girl {Kansas City child photographer}
My favorite session with my own child to date! A whole lotta urban color, tons of attitude, big toothy grins. The best part: A whole lotta Bella. She’s three to a “t” and loving every minute of it. Enjoy some of my favorites from her session. (Lots of images ahead, but I seriously couldn’t narrow down the blog picks any further!)

Gus Part Two {Kansas City baby photographer}
I’ve been dying to share the rest of these images with you after posting a few peeks from his newborn session here a few weeks back. We wanted to wait until the birth announcements were on their way out before scooping them with a blog post. So, without further ado … here’s Gus “part two.” His hair is 100 percent rock star!
Next week, I’ll post the birth announcement we custom-designed for him. Enjoy!

Maybe it was all the twirling {Kansas City maternity photographer}
I woke up Saturday morning and did my usual prep getting ready for a maternity session. Then I got the voice mail and text message. “Gone to the hospital. Stomach not feeling good. Can we move session?”
Being that she was nine days away from her due date with her first baby, I had a feeling they just might send her home, but I thought to myself obviously anything is possible.
Yes, I said, we can reschedule. Just text or call me with an update.
As luck would have it, it was a minor issue not at all related to the baby and they sent her home, so we rescheduled for yesterday morning and what a beautiful Sunday session it turned out to be. We did a part-urban, part-nature maternity session … (it’s ridiculous how cute she looked in her pre-pregnancy skinny jeans this close to delivery!)
But back to my reason for this post and one quick image that I instantly fell in love with. Maybe it was the twirling … maybe it was me asking her to sit crossy-legged in those jeans (unzipped, of course). Maybe it was my amazing pep talk right as we parted ways. The one where I said something about not fearing the epidural because by that point they could cut off your arm and you wouldn’t care. Oh and then there were my last words before saying I’ll see you at the newborn session: “You may just get lucky and be one of those women who goes to the hospital and has the baby three hours later.” I personally know of three such lucky creatures, so it’s not merely urban legend.
Well, guess who got lucky?
The rest of the story goes a little something like this (as summarized by this beautiful mama in her text message to me this morning):
Left session. Ate lunch. Took nap 3-6. Felt contractions. Went to hospital at 9, came back home at 11 or so. Hurt worse. Went back at 1 a.m. Had her at 4.
Stories like this and the beautiful expression on her face below as she was twirling away warm my heart. They welcomed a beautiful baby girl – you’ll see her on the blog and more maternity pics very, very soon!

The reason behind that smile {Kansas City baby photographer}
Remember this beautiful mama-to-be?

Meet Brekken. Just a week old. The newest little man in her life and the number one reason she can’t stop beaming. (Tisha – if you’re reading this … he “almost” broke Esmee’s record as my “most-awake-during-the-whole-session-just-out-of-the-oven” newborn. But we vowed to outlast him and we won! Here’s a peek of several favorites from his session … more to come as I wrap post-processing. Enjoy!

For the record, this *is* a real smile. (I refuse to believe anything else). Even though he favors dad quite a bit, if you know his mom, then you’ll probably agree with me, it’s identical to her own subtle grin.

As usual, I’m loving the color AND the black and white. What’s your favorite of these two?
